‘On the go’ diabetes education launched on Instagram

A new diabetes education service for healthcare professionals is now available on Instagram as part of a new project aiming to deliver “training on the go”.

The MyEden social media account has started by delivering a series of resources about the nine key care processes and will cover more topics in a bid to offer “busy professionals struggling for time” with access to vital, up-to-date clinical information.

It has been put together by Eden, the multi-award-winning team that delivers education and is part of theLeicester Diabetes Centre.

MyEden was launched on June 26 with the first topic in its series on the nine care processes, Urine ACR. A new care process will be released every two weeks.

There will be three posts about each care process and subsequent topic consisting of:

·      A flash card with essential info in four bullet points posted on a Monday

·      An infographic with a flowchart, algorithm or pathway shared on Wednesday

·      A short video summarising key points posted on Friday

The project is the brainchild of Education and Research Associates Fiona Munday and Vicki Alabraba. Fiona said: “This is about providing diabetes education training on the go for busy healthcare professionals who are struggling for time but need education.”

Vicki, who is also a Diabetes Specialist Nurse, added: “We wanted to try something a bit different, it’s about using technology to deliver swift and easy-to-access diabetes education for healthcare professionals.”

Laura Willcocks, Assistant Director Integration, Education and Innovation at the Leicester Diabetes Centre who leads the EDEN programme, said: “We are passionate about developing and delivering award-winning education programmes to healthcare professionals and support staff working in diabetes. The MyEden project is another way in which we can disseminate diabetes education.”

Based at Leicester General Hospital, the 3,000m2 Leicester Diabetes centre is a unique collaboration between the University of Leicester and University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.

Founded by the Leicester Diabetes Centre, Eden, which is celebrating over 10 years in service, delivers a variety of courses that cover different aspects of diabetes care and education, a few of which are Injectable Therapies, Eden Essentials Best Practice in type 2 diabetes care, Footcare and Weight Management Steps to Glucose Sensing. The Eden team is made up of specialists who all have education, clinical and academic roles.
