Agenda reveals hot topics taking centre stage at national diabetes footcare conference

Leading experts will delve into topics such as prevention strategies and the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) at a prestigious conference dedicated to diabetic footcare.

On Friday, May 9, the English Diabetes Footcare Network's annual national conference will bring together leading specialists to exchange best practices and unveil cutting-edge research.

Open to anyone interested in lower limb care, the free-to-attend, online conference will feature keynote speakers, case studies, panel discussions and presentations across the whole spectrum of diabetic foot healthcare.

EDFN chair and Consultant Podiatrist Richard Leigh said: “With the release of the agenda for this year's national conference, we are excited to welcome leading experts to share groundbreaking insights into diabetes footcare.

“As we address critical topics such as prevention strategies and the transformative potential of AI, this conference represents a pivotal moment for advancing care and shaping the future of foot health.”

He added: “Together, we are setting the stage for innovative solutions that will improve outcomes for those living with diabetes.”

The agenda is now available and includes thought-provoking topics such as ‘Saving the NHS: Why you matter?’, which will be presented by Stella Vig, Consultant Vascular and General Surgeon, National Medical Director for Secondary Care and Quality, and National Clinical Director for Elective Care.

Consultant Vascular Surgeon Arun Pherwani will share the findings of the National Vascular Registry’s latest review on the health of lower limb services. Meanwhile, Vascular Nurse Consultant Leanne Atkin will discuss whether the NHS should commission ‘diabetic foot’ or ‘acute lower limb’ services for prevention and treatment.

During the conference, Consultant Physician Michael Edmonds and Podiatrist Paul Chadwick will participate in a debate, addressing the question: Should multidisciplinary foot teams operate within community settings? This discussion will be followed by Consultant Podiatrist Matthew Allen, who will explore which lower limb hospital services could be transitioned to community care.

A session outlining the possibilities for digital and AI in lower limb care will also be presented by PodiatristPatricia Lee. Consultant Vascular Surgeon Dave Russell will round things off by revealing the results of the MIDFUT trial.

The EDFN National Conference will take place virtually on Friday, May 9, between 1pm and 4.45pm.

The EDFN plays a pivotal role in shaping national policy: a key role is to advise relevant stakeholders – including the Department of Health, NHS England, NHS Innovation, Strategic Clinical Networks and Diabetes UK – on all matters relating to service delivery and improvements in England for diabetes-related foot disease.
