Diabetes consultant publishes new book on autism
Different methods to navigate the complexities of autism and neurodiversity among people with type 1 diabetes have been published in the latest book of a renowned researcher.
Professor May Ng OBE has written the new novel to provide clarity and understanding for families, carers, educators and healthcare professionals caring for those with autism or neurodiversity and type 1 diabetes.
According to Professor Ng, type 1 diabetes management with diagnoses of autism and neurodiversity necessitates that healthcare providers are trained to understand the specific needs of neurodiverse individuals.
She is undertaking a study to understand the burdens of autism neurodiversity for adolescents and their caregivers in managing their type 1 diabetes and how diabetes units can develop a framework to support these families with a solution focused approach.
“Consultations should focus on tailoring communication strategies and creating personalised care plans in collaboration with people and their families, who are the true experts in navigating their diabetes and neurodiversity diagnosis,” said Professor Ng.
Following the success of A Journey with Brendan, which chronicled Professor May Ng’s personal and professional experiences as a paediatrician and mother raising an autistic son, she has now written her fourth book, Autism Decoded- The Essential Handbook.
She previously published ‘A Guide to Type 1 Diabetes Management, Technology, and Everything Else You Need to Know’
Prof May Ng noted: “Over the years, I’ve encountered countless students, colleagues and families who sought an easy-to-read, bite-sized resource to better understand autism and neurodiversity.
“Their feedback convinced me of the need for this book. Rather than an exhaustive review, Autism Decodedserves as a practical guide for anyone wishing to deepen their understanding of autism in a meaningful way.”
She added: “I hope this book will be a valuable resource to foster better communication with autistic and neurodiverse individuals and their families while promoting awareness and support.”
